A small interview by Marina (webmaster of www.artworld.net]
> What would you say about all the enormous amounts of
nudity and
pornography available on television, video, magazines
and Internet?

{Alann}
It inspires me, though not all of it. Others were inspired
too and made good
works- Gilbert and George, Mapplethorpe-Egon Shiele-
Felicien
Rops-Pierre et Gilles-Jeff Koons-....the list is long.
Of course not
all what I see on the internet inspires me; and frankly
I think the
word pornography is a Western invention. Go and see
the Khajuraho
temples in India and Chinese ink drawings based upon the Khajuraho sculptures. It's art, do the same in photography
it'll be called
pornography.
Let me tell you something of my childhood. As a kid of 12 I was very curious for anything that had to do with sex. My parents made it into a huge mystery, because they themselves were brought up that way. When I asked for information I got none or I was told: you'll find it in the books. So I did. At school my friends and I were always wondering, how one had sex.? From the front or from the backside of a girl. Yes, those were debates at our age. When I found a porn magazine under my brother's matress with whom I had to share the same bed, I saw it all. All...I thought nothing better then showing my school friends. But I got caught during recess on the playground with my 2 mates browsing through it. We were all interrogated like criminals but I was treated worst of all. The headmaster almost expelled me from school and my father had to beg on his knees not to call the cops for me. That was 1972 at a public school, mind you. It was not the magazine that had harmed me or shocked me. It was a revelation just the same as it was for my friends. But it was the horrific the way adults started to treat me and torture me mentally during and after that the event. I was traumatised by them and not by the pornmagazine. Eversince I've hated moralists or people who think that any nudity or porn image should be prohibited while the same people couldn't care less if a drunk runs his car over a kid, after all no one gets upset or be upset about a five year old watching a gory Rambo movie. But we do get upset over a nipple during the superbowl. Gee, that's shocking, isn't it? Just today I read an article about an American six year old boy who is now in custody for groping the breasts of a young girl of 10. In Europe we'd tell the boy: you can't be a bully like that and it would be over and done with. He would have gotten the message allright. But sending a little kid to court for that? Another incident I read in the papers last year? A boy sticks out his tongue at a girl in his classroom. Age: about 9 or so. The teacher calls it an act of obscenity and wants the boy in shrink therapy. Isn't that way over the top? That's what I mean by a sick society that doesn't know how to handle its kids anymore...lacking understanding, love and affection. And that's what will continue to drive me to make the paintings I make today.
